Matthew Shepherd

Matthew talks to us about his time at SAS and his autism.

What was your first day at the centre like?

My first day was surprising because I didn't know there were other people like me that autism.

What is your favourite activity at the centre?

My favourite activity is 'skills for life' because they help develop skills and help you attain new ones.

What do you learn about while at the centre?

I learn how to cook, you have to do it just right. In Drama Relationships we've been doing a project called 'The Lego Project', you create something that you like using lego and we get Lego donated.

How do you feel whilst at the centre?

Calm, excited and it's full of fun! When there's someone new we're all a bit cautious because you don't know if they're ok or not, but we just take how we find them.

What would you say to someone new?

I would advise them to wear ear defenders because it gets loud and they might not like that.

What are the staff like in the centre?

Funny, especially James. Just keep him from spicy stuff in the kitchen because it makes him crazy!

As someone with autism, what has been the big challenge you've had to overcome?

Meeting new people. I never know how they'll react to me and that makes me anxious.

What makes you happy?

Food, cooking, a little bit of everything. I like to laugh!
